The latest startups who graduated from the 500 Startups accelerator were incredibly international, with over 60 percent hailing from outside the United States. One of those was Wideo, a do-it-yourself video tool that got its start in Argentina.
Wideo was selected by the Buenos Aires government to take a tour of Silicon Valley, including the 500 Startups office. Eager to talk to founder Dave McClure, Wideo cofounder Agu De Marco followed him outside to smoke a cigarette and talk shop. At the end of the conversation, De Marco had a verbal invitation to be part of the next 500 Startups class – starting in mere weeks.
After such a whirlwind acceptance, De Marco found himself traveling alone to Mountain View while his team stayed in Argentina to save money. Six thousand miles apart, they refined and adjusted their animation software. Now, users can upload images, fonts, and animations to create everything from startup demo videos to e-cards. De Marco will be spending one more month in the United States before heading back to Argentina for a local accelerator program called NXTP Labs. He’ll be bringing back some lessons he learned for pitching in English, namely: get to the point fast. He says that startup pitches in Spanish tend to be unscripted and weave and stretch a bit more.
“In Latin America, we tend to talk a bit more. And here, you go just to the point, and that’s something I have to learn,” says De Marco, who realized the need for a DIY video tool at a previous startup.
This lesson will serve Wideo well when they return to the United States – which De Marco hopes to do – and vie with American startups for eyeballs and funding.
