The Almost-Summer Startup Update Edition – With Lots of Mobile App Updates
Jun 16, 2012
Happy almost-summer! Before diving into the mobile app updates, great news to share if you can’t manage your email inbox – and if you love sports.
If you are a typical entrepreneur, your inbox is overflowing day in and day out. SaneBox, makers of the cure to inbox madness, just released a new, very useful function. SaneRemindMe has some nifty features to help you keep even better track of your emails. You can track emails that need to be answered by a certain time; defer emails until you have time to deal with them; set reminders for important events (that will pop up in your inbox); and snooze follow-up actions for a day or week.
Since we last covered LockerDome 5 months ago, this recreationally-focused social network has grown an average of 25% week-over-week – for 24 straight weeks. They surpassed 900K monthly unique users, have more than 80 pro athletes, such as Troy Polamalu, and iconic brands, such as Rawlings, using it. To top off that good news, they recently closed a $1.04 million round of funding, bringing their total investment to $2.1 million. Now that is the kind of growth all startup founders dream of!
And in the mobile app department, lots of news to share:
If you get sick of having a conversation around “What are we going to do tonight?” – time to start using Woofound. This Baltimore-based startup, which demo’d at our Tech Cocktail Baltimore event last month, just launched their iPhone app in 60+ cities nationwide. By using a visual personality game called “Me or Not Me,” it identifies your personality type and then matches places, activities and restaurants to your preferences. Problem solved.
Another social discovery app, WhosHere, recently released their Android app, allowing you to connect safely and instantly via text and VOIP calls with like-minded people nearby. If you use this in conjunction with Woofound, you should start having some pretty fun outings! I can see this app being super useful during huge, chaotic events like Lollapalooza or SXSW.
Meanwhile, our friends at NYC-based Venmo, a mobile payment app, threw a release party for their Android app a few weeks ago at Hotel Chantelle – attended by more than 900 people. You get that many friends when you spend 2 years laboring on your app to make it perfect.
Til next time…. If you have any startup updates of your own to share now that we’ve covered you at least once on Tech Cocktail, please email them to me.
