In case you missed it, Tech Cocktail has proudly partnered with 1776, the Washington, DC-based startup incubator, to bring you the Challenge Cup – a global competition to identify the hottest startups in education, energy, health, and smart cities.
On February 1st, Challenge Cup will bring the excitement to Cape Town, where dozens of startups will battle for the four regional winners’ spots within their respective category.
The winners from each of the 16 events (8 international, 8 within the US) will move onto the final round and with it, the chance to win the $150,00 grand prize.
But we want to know what YOU think! Weigh in and let us know which of these startups from the event is the hottest by voting in the poll at the bottom of this post! The winner of the Reader’s Choice Polls from each group will be announced on tech.co on Thursday, February 6th.

Kytabu – Textbook subscription application that allows students to rent pre-installed textbooks on low-cost Android tablet or desktop applications. Students can rent content as pages, chapters or books on hourly, daily, weekly or monthly time frame and pay with mobile money.
IQmates –– Platform that allows students to connect with each other academically, share knowledge no matter what institutions they are from, register for courses and watch tutorial videos from their lecturers and tutors.
Rethink Education – An innovative, optimized approach to online and blended learning. The Rethink Team has developed an interactive online educational platform focused at the South Africa IEB and NSC Syllabus. The Rethink platform is currently being implemented in a number of schools in Johannesburg and Cape Town.
Squirrelthat– Platform that allows users to capture their learning immediately on any device. They later can choose what they want to do with it—including share it with groups of similar interests.
Student Grid –– The Student Grid is an ongoing photographic project about Bradford. It was originally part of a landscape project for students on the B.A. Photography in Digital Media course. The Student Grid concept was created by the students and the tutor of the course Charlie Meecham, who created the original Bradford Grid.
Green City Solutions – E-commerce website established to provide online shopping for students located in a particular geographical area.
Powertime – Range of mobile applications focused on electricity vending. Since the creation of the company, Powertime has established a strong relationship with more than 50 municipalities, including most major metros and private utilities and today supports over 9 million prepaid and postpaid electricity customers.
Medyear – Allows a person to download health records directly from healthcare entities. No more faxing or scanning paper documents. Just provide them your Medyear address, and your actual medical records are instantly, securely transmitted into a Medyear account that you control.
Anasodiabitiz – Connect with people, support groups, health care providers and companies in your locality that work together to make diabetes less of a scourge.
Doc Nearby – A tool to find doctors in your area, manage doctor appointments and schedule data, and communication between doctor and patient.
HealthQ– Building, testing and prototyping several new ideas in the personalized medical device arena specifically relating to wireless and mobile health.
Fraudcracker – The FraudCracker system is powered by our sister company, FeedbackRocket, which has developed powerful interactive technology to enable important anonymous conversations in the workplace. The company has revolutionized the 360 Degree Manager Review and the Climate Survey, and has won numerous international awards.
GoMetro – Platform that connects transit operators with their commuters much more effectively by using mobile channels of communication. The multi-platform app gives commuters tailored information on real-time arrivals and departures, current locations of vehicles, early notifications of operational breakdowns and travel disruptions. The platform then also allows operators to communicate intelligently with riders.
Mellowcabs – South African Non-motorized transport and advertising company, focusing on the implementation and operation of pedicabs nationwide. Pedicabs are high-tech, electrically assisted human-powered vehicles that facilitate first- and last-mile transport solutions across a broad spectrum.
Motivate My City – Aims to build city-wide cultures of empowerment and excellence in which people can grow and flourish, city by city.
Mydoorhandle – The easiest way to find people and places: simple and seamless, avoid frustrating phone calls & text messages, to explain directions to your address or location.
MySmartFarm — Mysmartfarm is a comprehensive consolidation of high tech agri-services on one cloud platform; deliberated to mine agricultural data, it is the Windows for farmers and designed to empower them with valuable, cost effective and scientific advice.
SPOTTM – SPOTTM is a crowd-sourcing mobile app that allows victims of crime to immediately report a crime to thousands of “spotters” in their area or instantly alert family and police during an emergency. In addition to real-time emergency reports, app users can also use the eDocket feature to report less-serious cases without going to the police station. This reduces waiting times at police stations, which in turn frees up valuable police resources.
