Demo Day: Betaspring Launches 16 Startups in Providence, RI

Betaspring, part of the Global Accelerator Network, is releasing 16 startups into the wild today.

Located in Providence, Rhode Island, the 12-week accelerator program offered mentorship, office space, and up to $20,000 in seed funding. It has been kickstarting startups since 2009, including Manpacks.

To join the fall 2012 program, submit an application by June 5.

Here are this season’s 16 startups:

Marketplace

  • AutoShag: A marketplace for buying cars at cheap prices, directly from dealer auctions. Founded by auto expert Charlie Karyanis.
  • Kay McGowan: A high-end curated marketplace of lifestyle and home goods, from pillows to bejeweled purses to tunics from Morocco. Founder Kay McGowan travels the world to handpick and uncover the history and culture of these items.
  • JumpOffCampus: A marketplace for off-campus student rentals. Founded by Tufts University grads Mark C. Abramowicz and Kyle Nichols-Schmolze.

Health

  • Care Thread: A health platform that helps medical teams collaborate in hospitals. They hope to reduce the medical errors that occur when patients are handed off to new doctors. Founded by health professionals Dr. Scott Guelich, Andrew Shearer, and Nick Adams.
  • Sproutel: Interactive toys for kids with chronic illnesses. Founded by Design for America cofounder Hannah Chung and Aaron Horowitz, both Northwestern University students.
  • Thryve: A health app that helps you figure out the connection between what you eat and how you feel.

Education

  • LessonWriter: An education tool that turns news articles into lesson plans. It automatically pulls out helpful vocabulary and grammar and lets teachers add additional questions. LessonWriter has 4 cofounders: Stephen Churchville and Jennifer Applebaum (both former teachers), as well as Ayan Babi Pal and Ben Phair.
  • Prepmatic: Test prep tools that make memorization easier. Founded by Elie Schoppik and Andrew Sohn.
  • RecoVend: A platform for educators to share, research, and buy the best tools and services. Founded by Jason Woodward and Kyle Judah, who just raised $50,000.

Entertainment

  • Moveable Code: Apps and games for “21st century play.”
  • Thumbs Up: An app for rating TV-show moments in real-time. Founded by Cass Sapir, a former documentary TV producer.

Enterprise

  • GBooking (formerly XLR Group): A platform to search, compare, and book services. Businesses sign up and then wait for the appointments to flow in. Recently received funding from Russian search giant Yandex. Led by Alexander Naslednikov.
  • Socialping: Twitter analytics for enterprise. Founded by Joel Strellner, a serial entrepreneur whose projects include UrlTrends and Twitturly.
  • TWOBOLT: A marketing tool to coordinate your email, social, and direct mail campaigns all in one place.

Other

  • Splitwise: A web and mobile app to split bills with friends and roommates – cutting down on arguments and frayed relationships. CEO Jonathan Bittner was one of Forbes’s 30 Under 30 in real estate in 2011. He is joined by Yale student Ryan Laughlin and Marshall Weir.
  • 121nexus: A political startup, but for the other side: their 121Campaign platform helps politicians personalize their communication with voters and donors and track support. Founded by law school grad Foster Sayers and patent prosecutor Albert Ho.
