The Downtown Speaker Series Talks Reddit and More With Alexis Ohanian [Video]

What’s the first thing you think of when you hear the name Alexis Ohanian? For most people, it’s Reddit – aka the Front Page of the Internet. And while Reddit has seen incredible success, Ohanian hasn’t only focused on the site, and his road to entrepreneurial success has been long and arduous.

After graduating the University of Virginia with his fellow friend and nerd Steve Huffman, the duo attempted to get into Paul Graham’s newly announced Y Combinator program. Their first idea, My Mobile Menu, was a solution for people to place food orders directly from their phone, but it was rejected by Graham and they were denied entry into Y Combinator.

True enough Graham disliked their idea, but he liked the two-man team enough to give them an opportunity for redemption; if they changed their idea they could be a part of the program. Thus, Reddit was officially born, and over the next few years, it slowly took off.

Since then, Ohanian has been affiliated with Breadpig, Hipmunk, and Das Kapital Capital. He has also made it a mission to let students in college know that there isn’t always a clear path toward entrepreneurial success, but that shouldn’t deter you from the course.

The Downtown Speaker Series brought Ohanian to Downtown Las Vegas as part of the mission to showcase inspirational and informative speakers’ ideas and passions.
