Keek: The Video-Based Social Networking Site

Oct 2, 2011

Keek

Why update your status with simple text when you can let people know what you’re doing with a video instead? Keek is a new social networking platform that allows users to instantly share “video status updates” with friends and family via their webcam or mobile device.

Users can record up to 36 seconds of video – a.k.a. “keeks” – using either a webcam, iPhone or Android device. A keek, by definition, is “a quick look, glance, or peek.” A fitting name for the new platform, as users can virtually record and send a keek in under a minute.

“We’ve created a platform that provides users with a fun new way to connect and share their lives. Keek is a place where people can interact and build communities through microvideo dialogue, which is more informative and fun than traditional microblogging or photo sharing,” says founder and CEO Isaac Raichyk.

The Toronto-based startup reminds me of Tout, the video sharing app that Shaq used to announce his retirement on Twitter. Similarly, Keek users can follow each other a la Twitter, but the site also features the latest and most popular keeks being viewed on the network a la YouTube.

Hailing users across North America and worldwide, people are using the service to microvlog concerts, travel experiences, parties and everything in between. Early adopters include popular YouTube star Keenan Cahill and social media guru Phil Campbell.

With new features on the way, Keek is a free and fast service that makes it easy to record and share your day-to-day adventures. What will you Keek?

The app is available now for  iOS or Android. You can check out Keek’s site here.
