Pinstagram: Billion Dollar Mashup?

May 2, 2012

Pinstagram

Pinterest and Instagram are two the of the fastest growing apps of all time. So I wonder what would happen if you combine them together?

Pinterest + Instagram Pinstagram

That is exactly what the team of Brandon Leonardo and Pek Pongpaet did with the launch of Pinstagram.co. The product combines the best of both worlds so you can now pin Instagram photos.

In talking to Brandon about his latest creation he had this to say:

“It started as a joke between my cofounder Pek and I. We were joking that if Pinterest and Instagram are two of the hottest companies right now, Pinterest for Instagram must be worth a lot and VCs would love it.”

The next day when Pek called Brandon and said:

“You’ll never believe what I built this morning… Pinstagram!”

Pek had designed the whole thing and so they started working together to make it fully functional. The biggest challenge they encountered was nailing all the little details that you have to think about to make sure the experience is right. There are a lot of moving pieces with the Pinterest design, so making sure it performed well was definitely a challenge they had to overcome.

I have to admit, they did a great job and since Instagram does not have a true web interface to view your photostream, I could see this mashup becoming popular.

When I asked them about what’s next, they admitted that this started as “a tongue in cheek weekend hack but early feedback has shown that people really like it.” So we’ll see where it goes from here.

But it begs me to question… Is this a billion dollar mashup?
