Tech.Co Startup of the Year Program FAQ

Tech.Co is touring the world hosting regional startup competitions and conducting online startup competitions, to find the world’s most innovative early stage companies. Regional and online winners get the chance to compete in Tech.Co’s Startup of the Year Competition finals at Innovate! and Celebrate Conference in San Francisco, CA in October, 2017. Exact date to be announced.

What is the criteria to be accepted into Tech.Co’s Startup of the Year Program?

We look for product excellence first, as well as a diversity in product ideas, teams, and geography.  We will only accept companies that have received no more than $4 MM in funding, are fewer than 4 years old, and have a live product/service that is in operation (it can be beta, but we must be able to see it).

How do I apply to participate in the Tech.Co Startup of the Year Program?

How will the Startup of the Year Competition work?

1. Apply before April 20th, 2017
2. Tech.Co’s internal staff will review and select the most promising startups to include in an online or regional competition.
3. Tech.Co staff, selected judges, and Tech.Co readers will vote for the most promising startups. The Tech.Co reader’s choice poll will run June 1st to July 1st.
4. The top companies from that round will be invited to the semifinals at Innovate! and Celebrate in San Francisco, CA where they will pitch to a variety of judges.  The judges will score the startups and the top five will pitch a smaller panel of investors judges, and the audience, at Innovate! and Celebrate. There, a final champion will be selected!

How do I participate in Tech.Co’s CES and SXSW Startup Nights? 

The Tech.Co team is excited to offer startups the opportunity to demo to communities at CES and SXSW. All startups interested in demoing at either event must complete the centralized Startup of the Year Program application. As applicants complete applications for these two Tech.Co events, they are also entered to be considered to compete as one of the Top 100 Semifinalists at Innovate! and Celebrate.

I want to demo at Tech.Co’s CES Startup Night. When will I learn if I am accepted to participate? 

The Tech.Co team will be accepting applications for our CES Startup Night on a rolling basis. If you are interested in applying to demo at our CES Startup Night, make sure to have your application in by December 10, 2016.We will contact startups invited to demo at our CES Startup Night on Monday, December 12, 2016. Only startups participating in Eureka Park at CES will be eligible to demo at this event. Selected startups must be in Las Vegas, NV for the event on January 4th, 2017.

I want to demo at Tech.Co’s SXSW Startup Night. What details do I need to be aware of? 

Like our CES Startup Night, we will be accepting applications on a rolling basis. If you are interested in applying to demo at our SXSW Startup Night, make sure to have your application in by Monday, February 20, 2017. We will contact startups invited to demo at our SXSW Startup Night soon after February 20th. Selected startups must be in Austin, TX for the event on March 12th, 2017.

What are the rules/guidelines for the Startup of the Year Online Competition?

You must complete your application on time – before April 20, 2017!

Bring your A game! We want to see the best startup teams from around the world at our Semifinals at Innovate! and Celebrate.

No cheating. Tech.Co’s third-party poll management system, Wedgies, will tabulate all votes made through the online poll and only count the last vote tallied on each machine. Wedgies takes into account information on each vote that includes, but is not limited to, IP Address, Timestamp, Session information, Device Fingerprint, and User Authentication to evaluate whether a vote is valid.  Wedgies reserves the right to remove any vote that appears to be fraudulent in nature, proactively removes fraudulent votes and will report final results back to Tech.Co that include the winner of the poll that did not partake in cheating.  Startups suspected of cheating will be disqualified.

When will I be notified that my company has been accepted into the final competition at Innovate! and Celebrate?

The Tech.Co team will contact all invited startups by July 10, 2017. Invited startups will have until August 1, 2017  to confirm their presence at Innovate! and Celebrate.
