In recent years, several big companies and websites were target to cyber attacks and data breaches. Acer, Facebook, Netflix and LinkedIn are just some of the examples and, whether it the initial purpose of the perpetrators or not, these attacks resulted in the stealing of personal information and data from thousands of users.

It goes without saying that those data breaches can be quite costly for the affected companies – in fact, IBM estimates that the average cost of a data breach is now $4 million, which is a 29% increase since 2013. Along with bad publicity, a sense of insecurity can grow among users and subscribers, in addition to the trouble of making users change their credentials, something that is clearly not good for business.

While there is no such thing as a 100% secure website, computer or server, some steps might be taken in order to avoid such threats. And, despite their devastating power, these data breaches can actually be helpful in avoiding future attacks. By studying data breaches and their causes, you can glean important insights into what failed and whats needs improvement.

A good way to visualize and understand those attacks and their causes is the infographic below, put together by RedPixie. It focuses on the 10 biggest data breaches, including attacks on LastPass, Sony, Blizzard or Apple.
