Prepare to be taken over by startups, Washington, because 1776’s Challenge Festival is finally upon us. In the last 6 months, Tech Cocktail has been closely following the Challenge Cup as it trekked through 16 cities across the globe, starting in D.C. itself, moving through cities like Beijing and Berlin, and ending its tour of regional startup competitions in San Francisco. Next week, all 64 semi-finalists will face off in their respective categories of education, energy, health, and smart cities, back here in Washington, D.C.; however, before jumping into next week’s events, come join us at the Challenge Festival Opening Party that’s taking place this Friday, May 9th at 1776!

In order to attend Friday’s Opening Party (sponsored by Opower and Morrison & Foerster), you need to be registered for, at least, the free Bronze badge to the Challenge Festival, which gives you access to the party and all free community events taking place next week. The party will be held at 1776 (1133 15th St. NW) and will last from 7 pm to 10 pm.

From 7 pm to 8:30 pm, D.C.’s own Union Kitchen will be providing several different food stations, featuring foods from some of the cities represented in the Challenge Cup competition, including:

  • a NY vs. Chicago pizza battle,
  • classic Washington, D.C. chili half-smoke,
  • Austin BBQ sliders, and
  • an L.A.-inspired salmon tartare.

Live music will be provided throughout the event, with dance-cover band, H Street All Stars, playing until 8:30 pm, followed by local D.C. rock-and-roll band, The Deadmen. And, of course, the drinks will be flowing all night, with two specials – the Startup Sangria and the Challenge Crush – to get you in the Challenge Festival mood.

According to 1776, attendees of the Opening Party will also get an exclusive peek at 1776’s newest floor – definitely something you don’t want to miss. 1776’s Instagram feed gave us a glimpse a few weeks ago, but they haven’t divulged much since.

Part of the new expansion? I guess you’ll have to find out for yourself. (via 1776)

To attend Friday’s Opening Party, register now for the FREE Bronze badge, or register for one of the higher-level badges if you’re interested in getting your fill of Challenge Festival events.

The Challenge Cup is produced by 1776 in partnership with Tech Cocktail and iStrategyLabs.
