Earlier this morning, someone spotted something a little special going on in an area of land just shy of south Rawlpindi, a city in Pakistan. To be clear, it’s wasn’t spotted as an actual occurrence in the real world; rather, the image was spotted on Google Maps (and is still available for viewing at the time of writing this article).
The news was initially reported by The Guardian and has also been posted on sites like Hacker News, where discussions are taking place regarding how or why the image came to be. According to The Guardian, Google has reportedly removed the Android image and will soon disappear from Google Maps.
Per Google’s statement to The Guardian:
“We’ve terminated the Android figure involved in this incident, and he’ll be disappearing from Google Maps shortly.”
Apparently, the image was added through Google Map Maker, a feature on Google Maps that lets users from the Internet add their own contributions to maps. Designed to help make maps more useful (through the addition of missing street names, parks, landmarks, etc.), the information added by users through Google Map Maker is often highly moderated; however, it seems there was a major lack of oversight, hence the appearance of the Google Android peeing on the Apple logo.
