What Arianna Huffington Taught Me About the Importance of Sleep

An entrepreneur’s mind is always working. Subsequently, great ideas can often get in the way of getting enough sleep. Entrepreneurs wonder why they feel so run down, while the answer is lying in front of them in the form of an unused pillow and an already-made bed. Sleep is the key to success and most entrepreneurs, unfortunately, view it as a waste of time.

I have taken some inspiration from Arianna Huffington’s recent publication The Sleep Revolution: Transforming Your Life, One Night at A Time. She makes some valid points that all entrepreneurs need to pay attention to.

Without Sleep, Dysfunction Occurs

When entrepreneurs only rest for a few hours a night (less than the 7 hours recommended for adults), their thought process works differently. Personally, I notice that when I get less rest, I have a hard time focusing on a single task at a time – my brain jumps from thought to thought. From reading Arianna Huffington’s book, she clearly outlines that improving our relationship with sleep will improve our productivity and prevent dysfunction.

Restful Sleep Improves Health

Lack of rest can increase stress, tension, and often results in poor eating habits. All of these combined interrupt a good night’s sleep more than you know. Sleep deprivation also results in depression, anxiety, and the inability to focus. Adopting a healthy lifestyle that includes exercise, a healthy diet, and a regular sleep schedule is something that many entrepreneurs like myself strive to balance, but often fall short of achieving.

Greater Success from Sleeping Better

As you know, some of your greatest ideas come during your resting hours. Some of the most successful entrepreneurs had some of their most creative thoughts at the strangest moments – including while asleep. This is because your mind relaxes and allows thoughts to complete naturally, even when we aren’t aware of it.

As Arianna’s writings suggest, forced creativity often results in failure, frustration, and wasted time. To an entrepreneur, wasted time is a wasted opportunity on the next trending tech gadget or blockbuster startup company forming.

Closing Thoughts

After reading The Sleep Revolution: Transforming Your Life, One Night At A Time, it’s clear that entrepreneurs need to make time to rest. They need to reduce the stress in their lives and create a better work/life balance. As much as their businesses command their attention, their families and personal relationships command the same. Feeling fulfilled comes from being successful with their businesses and having strong bonds outside of the business world with their families.

All of those things require energy — which only comes from getting enough rest. If you don’t get enough sleep, your brains can’t think using the right processes. Forced thoughts lead to missed opportunities, wasted time, and major business fails. Sometimes making a change to improve your health, resting and taking time away from our businesses is what makes us successful.
