Did you know that the adoption rate for home automation technology is only about 2 percent? Ashish Dua, cofounder of Switchmate, believes that’s because the current options available to users are either too complicated or too inaccessible to the average consumer.
Switchmate was built to resonate with these consumers, and it’s so easy to install onto existing infrastructure. The whole goal for Switchmate is to make home automation really, truly simple.
The idea came from Dua’s cofounder, Robert Romano, during his PhD program at Stanford: he was tasked with controlling something manually with a smartphone. He decided that he wanted to control the lights in his room from his bed, but it grew so far beyond that.
Imagine the impact that might have on students in dorms, people renting, or those unable to change crucial infrastructure in their homes to adopt home automation technologies. Actually, I’ll do you one better – check out their Indiegogo campaign to see just how excited people were about this concept.
Taking hardware from an idea in your mind to a live product on the market is difficult though, especially when it comes to manufacturing – which is usually the next big step after crowdfunding. Thankfully for Switchmate, they were accepted into Highway 1 who took them to Shenzen, China to see products coming off the line from previous Highway 1 companies.
As they continue to move forward Dua assures us that the philosophy of Switchmate will remain the same: make home automation as easy as possible. We got a live demo of the product at SXSW this year and spoke with him about what the future holds. Here’s the video:
