Amazon Fire TV Range Explained

There are four main Amazon Fire TV products to consider:

Amazon Fire TV Stick (1st Gen) – As the name suggests, this is the first generation Amazon Fire TV stick. It’s a small dongle that goes into the USB port of your TV (it also needs a power cable), and instantly gives you access to a host of new apps and channels, including Hulu, Netflix, Showtime, NBC, ESPN and HBO Now. It is also voice activated, meaning you can control all these new features just by talking to your TV. It also comes with a remote control.

Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K – An update the original Fire TV Stick, the latest version adds 4K streaming, meaning ultra high definition content, as long as your TV is compatible. While you don’t need to be subscribed to Amazon’s Prime service to use any of the Amazon Fire TV apps, doing so gives you a lot more options, regardless of the device you opt for, including Amazon Video and its music streaming service.

Amazon Fire TV Cube – The Amazon Fire TV Cube is a marriage of the Fire TV Stick and Amazon’s voice assistant, Alexa. Unlike the Fire Stick, the TV Cube doesn’t plug into your TV, but sits on its own, and can be used to control any compatible smart products in the house, such as a TV, sound bar or even your lighting. It also features a built-in speaker, allowing you to check the weather, listen to news, or play music. Naturally, it can also do everything the Fire TV stick can. That includes access to thousands of new shows and movies through its various apps. And, yes, it’s also voice activated.

Fire TV Recast – Amazon’s answer to the DVR, the Fire TV Recast gives you the ability to record shows to watch later, with storage space for 75 hours of HD content. It can recognise voice commands, making searching for your favourite recordings a simple case of asking for them rather than scrolling through never-ending menus. The Fire TV Recast works in conjunction with a Fire TV stick or Cube, or Amazon’s Echo Show, so you’ll need one of these devices too for the full set up.
