Bill Miller, chairman and CIO of Legg Mason, has led a $4.5M round in Personal and is joining its board of directors along with technology investor,  Esther Dyson, and former AOL CEO, Jonathan Miller.

Personal is a digital vault and private network for people to store and manage their most important information and documents.  It is built on a privacy- and security-by-design platform and helps individuals to properly leverage their information so they can get the most value from it.  The information in users’ vaults remain legally theirs, and it can’t be shared without their permission. It was founded by Shane Green in 2009 along with his team from The Map Network, a former company that he founded and ran from 1999 until 2006 when it was acquired by Nokia/NAVTEQ.

Bill Miller said: “As a long-term investor, I have no doubt that Personal is building the most rational, sustainable model for the personal data ecosystem – one centered around the individual first and foremost. The fact that it is also so beneficial for use with trusted companies and apps – including improving their bottom lines, lowering their risks and enhancing their brands – really solidified my interest in investing.”

Bill’s expertise and previous investments are well in line with Personal’s mission of empowering people with the data they need to power their increasingly connected lives.  Shane is thrilled to have Bill, Esther, and John as part of the team, saying that “each brings a special and unique set of experiences and skills to the company at an important time as we manage acceleration and growth.”

Shane was a keynote speaker at Tech Cocktail Sessions in DC a while back.  Check out his talk here.
