A restaurant recommendation from a friend is like gold–but where do you turn when you don’t have that first-person seal of approval? Online, of course! There are P-L-E-N-T-Y of sites and apps tailored to restaurant-goers looking to try something new. You could pick one and sift through it, or, you could head to a place like BiteHunter to do that work for you.
While you’re at it, you’d probably like to know which restaurant is running a deal. There is money to be saved and tons of restaurants are offering deals through social media venues – however, you could spend all day chasing or rather, ahem, “hunting” them down. BiteHunter, again, does this work for you. BiteHunter is a real-time search engine aggregating local dining deals. This site not only offers suggestions based on your particular hankering at the moment, it displays all related and meaningful dining deals, promotions events and live updates generated from restaurants and users.
BiteHunter pulls in deal information from Twitter, Facebook and Open Table, and is integrated with Foursquare and Facebook check-ins to aid you in your dining decision. Search results are generated in real-time, a feature that sets it apart from sites that collect user-generated reviews. Additionally, the focus is solely on restaurants, unlike Bizzy and TheDealMap, whose content focus is broader. Launched in early 2010, BiteHunter currently helps those looking to find restaurant deals in Chicago, New York and San Francisco.
BiteHunter.com was co-founded by Gi Harel, who not only has experience in the online dining market as co-founder & CEO of DiningFever.com, but also picked up an understanding of the appeal of the deal through his role as market manager at Expedia, Inc. Harel is now CEO. Ido Shilon, co-founder and CTO, was previously VP of Engineering at StructuredWeb, on the head engineering team at Meevee.com, and was an officer in the IDF R&D unit at MAMRAM (the Israel Defense Forces’ central computing system unit).
BiteHunter is one of the showcased startups at Tech Cocktail NYC this Thursday, April 14 – put your dinner reservations on hold that night and come on out!
