Cathy Brooks has made a bet on Las Vegas. At the end of 2012, she left a 20-year career in the tech industry to open the Downtown Dog House dog day care and training school.

Working with the Downtown Project, she and her 70-pound Labradoodle Truman will provide much-needed canine services to the growing resident population of downtown Las Vegas – which will grow even more in the fall as Zappos moves its headquarters there.

And don’t let the furry vest fool you: Brooks has a keen and deep knowledge of technology. Her two decades in the industry were spent helping brands tell their stories, curating big tech conferences, and working at a San Francisco startup. She also hosts The Conversation, a podcast on how technology is changing our lives.

Below, Brooks shares her perspective on the revitalization of the “emotionally damaged and bruised” downtown Las Vegas, how brands can tell a compelling story, and startup trends she predicts for 2013. Here’s the video.

Tech Cocktail Week is a monthly series of events that takes place downtown Las Vegas and is produced in partnership with Tony Hsieh’s Downtown Project.
