It was only a matter of time and leave it to three women from Harvard University to fill in the media marketplace hole for providing content targeted directly to college women across the U.S. at Her Campus. Launched in September 2009, the trio’s mission also includes redefining the future of online magazines by individualizing content, providing a platform for companies to effectively market themselves to college students in creative ways and serve as a career launching point for the nation’s top college journalists by providing them with a national platform for the publication of their work.
The group got their start by entering and winning Harvard College’s business plan competition, the i3 Innovation Challenge, in March 2009. The team has gained momentum with hundreds of participating journalists offering topical content on style, health, love, dorm-life, career and world. They also supplement with campus-specific content from 50+ colleges and a store where readers can become shoppers, purchasing university-specific jewelry, watches and more. Like other media sites, Her Campus leverages Google ads and a growing number of strategic partnerships.
Her Campus has received widespread press in the past several months including a spot for it’s founders in Inc. magazine’s 30 Under 30 Coolest Young Entrepreneurs for 2010.
