Curated Second-Hand Furniture Gives Shabby Chic a New Spin at Furnishly

Maybe it is your budget that drives you to the classifieds or the thrill of finding a unique piece that will stand out in your home – either way, finding second-hand furniture is an arduous task, from poor-quality photos to scrolling through photos of furniture with holes, tears and other dubious damage.  Furnishly aims to change this and make you an amateur interior designer, able to easily track down hidden and not-so-hidden treasures in the second-hand furniture market.

Furnishly was founded by Bryon Finke as a result of his own frustrations.  It follows in the footsteps of the curation trend that has spread across the web – their goal is to curate the second-hand furniture marketplace.

The Furnishly team has developed several strategies to build their database of available second-hand furniture.  Those looking to sell on the site must go through a formal submission and approval process to keep quality high.  The team is also building strong relationships with consignment shops around the country; shops will be able to secure a configurable store page that feeds into Furnishly’s searchable database of furniture.

Additionally, the team recently launched Furnishlyst, a second-site which is the culmination of searching and finding the best furniture on sale through Craigslist so sellers on that site, at no cost to them, are able to get additional views of their items.

The challenge moving forward is to quickly raise visibility, while the photos, quality and the variety of available furniture are going to drive the repeat visits and growth.  As Furnishly continues to expand from its current seven markets (Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco and San Jose), it would be great if their business model could facilitate the shipping of all that furniture between their markets.
