Earlier today, eBay Inc. announced that it will acquire Los Angeles-based Magento, a leading open-source ecommerce platform that serves tens of thousands of merchants worldwide.

Magento’s high degree of flexibility and control over the user experience, catalog, content and functionality of their online store has made it a go-to choice for enterprise-level solutions.  They also offers a hosted software-as-a-service solution, Magento Go, that helps small and growing merchants manage their ecommerce sites, from payments to inventory management.

The acquisition comes just as eBay is preparing to launch their X.Commerce, a newly created integrated open commerce platform group that is focused on building a robust developer community as a resource for merchants and retailers of all sizes. More details about this new group will be shared during the X.Commerce Innovate conference on October 12-13 in San Francisco.
