EdTech, or education technology, is often an underrepresented field in the mainstream. But as major tech companies begin to lead projects that will highlight the niche industry, more emphasis could be placed on the industry.
Amazon, leading the charge, pushes to create Inspire – a “new service is meant to provide teachers with students anywhere from kindergarten to 12th grade a place to find and share free education materials”, as stated by Mashable. The portal is meant to give educators access to a variety of free resources that can help to improve their methods of teaching – especially when it comes to giving more interest in technology and other STEM-related subjects.
In a press release about the new initiative, general manager of Amazon K-12 Education, Rohit Agarwal, said:
Amazon joins educators from around the country in recognizing the power of digital learning to transform the classroom, by creating a personalized, engaging learning environment for all students.
Although some people have never heard of EdTech, the niche industry is on the rise – estimated to be worth $8.38 million in the U.S. alone. Over the last year, according to EducationWorld, “online course went up in revenue by 320 percent”. In fact, the growth and peaking interest in EdTech could spur more resources being devoted to the field, making for an interesting opportunity for innovation.
