Famed Italian fashion designer Miuccia Prada once said that “fashion is an instant language,” and Fashom founder Mitali Saxena couldn’t agree more. She started Fashom to give everyday fashionistas around the world a platform to post their favorite styles and be inspired by peers near and far.
Fashom is a social fashion sharing platform that allows users to post photos and videos of their favorite looks, add comments, vote for styles, follow their favorite people, geo-tag items on a map, and even share on other social platforms. Early adopters of the platform so far are users in their teens and twenties who think of it as an Instagram for everyday fashion. Fashom has also caught the attention of Miami bloggers who are engaging the platform’s growing global community.
Saxena’s initial inspiration for Fashom came from traveling. She would wonder about what people at her destination would wear during the day or at night, and what would be the best outfits to pack for her trip. Combined with frequent comments and questions from friends about her outfits on social media, Saxena recognized the need for a platform that streamlined how everyday people around the world communicated about the fashion that mattered to them.
In April of 2013, Saxena leveraged over ten years of telecom experience and two degrees in engineering to start Fashom. She has fully bootstrapped her startup so far, employing developers overseas. Building on its web-based portal, Saxena launched Fashom’s iOS mobile app and in early February and says an Android version is in the works.
A relative newcomer to Miami, Saxena’s goals for 2014 are to fully immerse herself in the Miami tech startup ecosystem and grow Fashom’s user base to a target of 50,000 users by mid-year.
