The School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Florida International University announced today that Alex de Carvalho, a social media professional with extensive involvement in South Florida’s tech community, has been named the Knight Innovator in Residence.
As Knight Innovator in Residence, de Carvalho will work with students and faculty to develop media projects, as well as new courses and teaching techniques in digital media. The initiative is funded by $150,000 from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation that will support the program for three years.
“This new position reflects our commitment to providing students the cutting-edge skills and expertise needed to succeed in this rapidly changing media environment,” said Raul Reis, dean of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication.
Prior to being the Knight Innovator de Carvalho acted as the South Florida regional development director for online marketing company Constant Contact and served as an adjunct professor in the University of Miami’s School of Communications. He has been active in South Florida’s entrepreneurial community, organizing events such as The Startup Forum, Social Media Club, BarCamp, Ignite Miami, Social Media Day and Mobile Monday events. He is also a founding member of RefreshMiami, South Florida’s largest tech meetup.
“I look forward to taking on a new and greater challenge, with the objective of helping develop future communication professionals in FIU’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication,” said de Carvalho.
Tech Cocktail received a $150,000 grant from the Knight Foundation.
