Celebrate #GivingTuesday with These 3 Charity-Supporting Gaming Apps

Decode Global, a startup that develops mobile games for social change, recently launched an initiative in partnership with Charity Miles and the Global Gaming Initiative that emphasizes our ability to give back to charities and change lives by simply engaging in fun games in or activities through our mobile phones. This “Change in Your Pocket” movement is celebrating their initiative by encouraging people to download their apps this GivingTuesday.

On December 3rd of last year, #GivingTuesday – a national day of giving – was added to our calendar, following Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday. Led by the nonprofit, 92nd St Y, and founded in part by the likes of the United Nations Foundation, DonorsChoose.org, Mashable, charity: water, Kiva, Microsoft, and the Case Foundation, the GivingTuesday movement was created to encourage people to celebrate and to encourage charitable activities supporting nonprofit organizations.

Last year’s first GivingTuesday led to more than 2,500 partners and donations through Blackbaud, DonorPerfect, and PayPal. Mobile donations saw increases of 53 percent, 46 percent, and 487 percent (yes – you’re reading that correctly….487 percent!) from the previous year’s numbers. This year, the movement has only continued to gain momentum, as it has been more widely accepted by the American public (my alma mater has even launched a fundraising campaign echoing the concept).

The apps created by Decode Global, Charity Miles, and the Global Gaming Initiative all pair gaming with giving to charitable causes – it really is a unique way to engage users in a fun activity all while supporting social causes. And, I mean, playing around with these apps is also a good way to get your kids involved in charity.

Decode Global: Get Water!

Get Water! is an endless runner that raises awareness on the ongoing water crisis in developing countries. Fifty percent of the proceeds from in-app purchases will benefit charity: water, whose mission is to bring clean and safe drinking water to every person in the world. Download it for iOS.

Global Gaming Initiative: Sidekick Cycle

Sidekick Cycle is a fun, one-touch, downhill bike racing game, where 50 percent of the proceeds from in-app sales are donated to World Bicycle Relief, who provides bicycles to children in Africa. Download it for iOS

Charity Miles: Charity Miles

Charity Miles is a free iPhone/Android app that allows you to earn corporate sponsorships for various charities (such as Habitat for Humanity, StandUp2Cancer, ASPCA, and DoSomething.org) by walking, running or biking. While not necessarily gaming per se, Charity Miles still incorporates the mobile use with charity support. Download it for iOS or for Android
