Sklar was born in Toronto and studied law, then went on to a career in media. She spent time as a freelance writer and Huffington Post founding editor before cofounding Change the Ratio to bring more visibility and opportunity to women in the digital space.
Founded in 2012 with Glynnis MacNicol, The Li.st is an extension of Change the Ratio, a way to put their ideas into practice and give women a place to connect. It’s a network and a media platform where women gather to advance their ideas, their careers, and their lives.
Sklar is also active in the startup space, serving as a Techstars mentor and advisor to The Daily Muse, Vox Media, Lover.ly, and more.
At the end of October, Sklar announced that she was pregnant in a Medium post called “I’m 41, Single, and Pregnant.” Her message? It’s not weird to be older and pregnant, or single and pregnant – not every family looks like a perfect TV commercial. It’s time to start having more conversations about fertility challenges, she wrote:
“In 2014, having children is complicated and daunting and fraught — as much as it’s always been, but now we’re talking about it. And the more we talk about it, the more of us will realize that we’re not going through it alone.”
More than anything, that might be Sklar’s legacy: to show us that we’re not going through it alone, whether it’s pregnancy or discrimination or doubts. TheLi.st, Change the Ratio, and her writings are all a testament to that powerful message.
