It may be closer than you think. While Tony Hawk and friends may not be using these boards to escape a weird punk skate gang in Hill Valley any time soon, the hoverboard technology is under development. According to this Kickstarter, Hendo Hover is developing the world’s first real hoverboard and creating a developer kit to go along with it.
Week by week, advancements are being made to the hoverboard. The 18th prototype is being displayed on the campaign page. Check it out below as Tony Hawk takes it for a spin.
According to the explanation on the campaign’s site, “the magic behind the hoverboard lies in its four disc-shaped hover engines. These engines induce an opposing magnetic field in the surface substrate below that provides lift, levitating our board off the ground.” Hendo Hover is also offering The Whitebox Developer Kit, to allow others to imagine what else can be created with this technology.
Earnshaw’s Theorum explains why simply placing two magnets over each other with their identical poles facing does not produce a floating effect. The basic principle dictates that stable static equilibrium between two magnets is impossible. But Lenz’s law explains how eddy currents are created when magnets are moved relative to conductive material. The technology used by Hendo Hover efficiently focuses the field created by these eddy currents.
Jill and Greg Henderson are the founders of Hendo, and it was Greg’s vision that lead to the patented Magnetic Field Architecture technology behind these products.
The Kickstarter has surpassed its fundraising goal of $250,000 and there are still three weeks left in the campaign. There are still many options for backers, and the founders ask you to feel free to add the dollar amount of more than one campaign to your pledge. Message the team to specify which additions you are requesting. The final launch date is set for October 21, 2015. I hope you’re getting that reference.
