In January, 2013 Imgur announced the launch of their Android app while iOS users had to wait a little while for theirs. However, their patience was not without it’s due reward; iOS users rejoiced today as Imgur finally got the go ahead to launch their iPhone app on the App Store.
But now it’s the Android users’ turn to wait as this newly designed iOS app has features not yet on it’s Android counterpart. Imgur says that this new app, with it’s abundantly rich features, will be arriving on Android soon though.
“Imgur is a place where you can discover an endless stream of funny, informative, fascinating, and unexpected visual stories that you won’t find anywhere else on the web,” says Alan Schaaf, founder and CEO of Imgur. “Imgurians increasingly live on their mobile devices, and we wanted to make it as easy as possible for them to browse and discuss Imgur’s content wherever and whenever they want.”
The newly released iPhone app will do one thing incredibly well: make it easy to brose and comment on Imgur’s content. The navigation and menus in the app recede to the background to put the content front and center, while at the same time providing quick voting, favoriting, and commenting.
“The images and comments shared by Imgurians are what make Imgur awesome,” says Joseph Huang, Director of Mobile Product Design for Imgur. “Our design philosophy was content, not clutter. We designed a simple interface that gets out of the way and devotes as much screen real estate to the content as possible while making it easy to access menus and buttons when you need to.”
Imgur for iPhone is the latest in a number of product announcements from Imgur: the company recently released video to GIF (pronounced JIF – it’s a soft ‘G’), as well as providing pro accounts to all users so they can share more high-quality content.
“We’ve provided a number of tools to help Imgurians create great content for Imgur. Now we’re providing a great way to view that content on their most personal devices,” says Schaaf. “Imgur is now a mobile-first company, and we will be doing more, a lot more, in the coming months in mobile, and we can’t wait to share what we’ve been cooking up.”
