Companies are always scrounging for ways to improve employee productivity, with things like free gourmet lunches, four-day weeks, and fancy espresso machines.

To see whether the latest fad in employee pampering is working, companies need a way to track their goals and progress. Designed for small and medium businesses, WorkforceGrowth.com gives them an online platform to manage employees with performance reviews, goal setting, employee rewards, and analytics. Below, CEO Qasim Mueen talks about what he and his productive employees have built.

Tech Cocktail: What was the inspiration behind WorkforceGrowth.com?

Qasim Mueen: A former Campbell’s Soup CEO, Doug Conant, once said, “To win in the marketplace you must first win in the workplace.” In order to win in the workplace, companies should focus on 1) having a deep employee insight, 2) improving employee productivity, and 3) increasing employee retention. And unfortunately, the current tools are just not up to the par in the marketplace. This is the exact problem we faced in our first startup, Zigron Inc., and that is where the original idea came from.

Tech Cocktail: Describe a challenging moment for WorkforceGrowth.com. 

Mueen: Challenge: WorkforceGrowth had no funds and almost no sales by December 2011.

Solution: We hired an offshore sales guy to start sales. He did some sales that stabilized revenues. Until that time I was using a part-time product manager. The next thing is to make him full-time. Then pushed on organic sales a bit. Then hired marketing interns and generated more leads. Now, working on building channel partnerships and the next step is to raise money and continue executing on our strategy.

Learning: Everything is possible, if our intentions are right and we use our brains and put in all of our efforts.

Tech Cocktail: What’s one quirky fact about your office culture? 

Mueen: Office culture is very flexible and friendly. Ideas from all employees are more than welcome.
