There are several projects aiming to provide Internet access across the entire globe. Some well-known examples are Facebook’s and Google’s Project Loon, both of which have the goal to expand Internet’s outreach and democratize access to it. Facebook and Google are pioneers in this field, but they are not the only ones doing so.

The Companies

Airborne Wireless Network (AWN) is a company developing a fully meshed network in the sky, using commercial aircrafts for that purpose. After buying the patent for this technology last year, AWN now intends to further develop and deploy this technology. And, just recently, an important step was made towards that goal, as AWN signed a partnership with Air Lease Corporation.

Air Lease Corporation (ALC) is a leading aircraft leasing company, doing business by buying commercial aircrafts and leasing them to some of the big players in the industry, such as Emirates, British Airways, Air France, Qantas, Thomas Cook, KLM, easyJet, and others.

AWN’s technology, “Infinitus Super Highway™”, will establish a high-speed broadband airborne wireless network. To do so, it will link commercial aircrafts in flight and use them as repeaters in a network, in which broadband signals are sent and received from one aircraft to another.

This will create a true digital superhighway in the sky, with a high-speed broadband internet pipeline that will increase coverage connectivity. AWN does not intend to provide retail customer coverage to end users, only to be wholesale carrier with target customers such as ISPs and telephone companies.

The Partnership: Internet in the Sky

The two companies have recently announced they have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding, having to do a strategic marketing partnership for AWN’s proposed broadband wireless network. ALC’s client list is vast and spread across the entire world, making it the perfect partner to market and spread the word about the technology being developed by AWN.

Jason de Mos, AWN’s VP Business Development and Compliance, commented on why this partnership is important:

“Air Lease Corporation is one of the world’s largest aircraft leasing companies. We are excited that they are on board to market our system to their worldwide airline customers and to introduce us to manufacturers such as Boeing and Airbus with the goal of having our equipment pre-wired on new aircraft.

Our collaboration will be a big step toward making our vision a reality, as we believe our airborne digital highway is the logical solution to fill the world’s connectivity void.  This partnership is a perfect fit for our strategy and will contribute significantly to the future of Airborne Wireless.”
