Distracted driving due to texting or talking on a cell phone is a growing problem. As we’ve covered in the past, its a problem that many startups are trying to tackle in different ways. One of these companies that has come up with a solution is Newton, Massachusetts based Illume Software. They have created a mobile app called iZup (eyes up; get it?).
iZup is an application that uses your phone’s built-in GPS to determine if the car is moving. If iZup does indeed think that you are in a moving car, it will limit the phone’s capabilities. In the mean time, it will hold all your calls, texts, and emails until you can read them safely. Although the abilities of the phone are limited while your in the car, you can still make calls to a list of predetermined numbers like a parent or employer. The application also allows one application to run in the background while iZup is on; most likely this would be a navigation app. In addition, there is also one touch dialing for 911 emergency services. Currently iZup is available for iPhone, Blackberry, and Android devices. The application is $4.95 per month or $49.95 annually for a single user license and $9.95 per month or $99.95 for a family plan.
iZUP will be a showcased startup featured at the upcoming TECH cocktail Boston startup mixer on Thursday night at the Microsoft NERD Center in Cambridge.
