Andrew Warner is Founder of Mixergy, a project where proven entrepreneurs teach how they build their businesses. Prior to Mixery, Warner parlayed a stack of credit card debt to build Bradford & Reed, a $30+ million a year online greeting card company.

Alexis Ohanian is currently the head marketing dude at Hipmunk and Ambassador to the East for startup accelerator Y Combinator. He also Co-Founded and founded Breadpig. TechCrunch calls him “one of the more passionate and audacious young entrepreneurs in tech.”

Andrew asked Alexis how to get others to care about their business. Alexis said that customer service is the biggest factor in making a successful business and if the customer service is good then the clients will appreciate it and become repeat customers.

Andrew asked Alexis how he comes up with his crazy but effective marketing material. His response was a marijuana induced brainstorming session. As crazy as this sounds, it has seemed to work for Alexis and through this process he has been able to market his products and services effectively. Alexis mentioned that in order to effectively market a product, it must actually be a good product to begin with. You can market the hell out of a piece of dirt and you might even convince a few people that they actually need that piece of dirt, but at the end of the day your product is still just a piece of dirt and sooner or later people will realize it and then you will be in trouble. Alexis said that it’s all the little things that you do to market that will ultimately be the driving push to elevate your business to where you want it to be. If you can enjoy yourself while marketing and actually make it fun then then chances are that energy will translate into an effective message.
