Making Smart, Smarter: Tempo Raises $10 Million for Improvements

Tempo AI today announced that it has raised $10 million for its smartphone calendar app, Tempo, to establish its mark at the top of the productivity world. Relay Ventures led Tempo’s first, and unannounced, $2.5 million seed round, and came back heavy-handed with Sierra Ventures to lead this Series A round.

In addition to the money, Relay Ventures, Sierra Ventures, and SRI are planting Kevin Talbot, Ben Yu, and Norman Winarsky on the board of directors for Tempo AI.

Tempo was initially developed at SRI International, the not-for-profit research institute that gave the world Siri. Due in large part to its contextual awareness, Tempo has been dubbed the “first intelligent calendar” and “sophisticated personal assistant app.”

The funds will be put towards building even better artificial intelligence for Tempo; the team hopes that the calendar app will be able to anticipate users’ moves. That is, CEO Raj Singh wants Tempo to learn from your documents, driving directions, and relevant information.

“We’re on a mission to help people get more done by building a mobile assistant in the calendar, picking up where Siri left off,” says Singh in the press release. “The calendar serves as the perfect framework because it has real context. This is the future of big data engineering – to push the AI down into the individual bits of your calendar.”
