The transparent economy has gone to the new level – medical. These days it’s nearly impossible to shop around and compare the prices on medical procedures and checkups. Doctible, a new startup launched in San Diego, is about to change that with the power of e-commerce.
Co-founded by Ajit Viswanathan and Leon Hu in December 2013, Doctible is gradually becoming the most accurate cash pay provider network where patients can see actual prices before setting up an appointment with the doctor. On April 29th, Doctible closed a successful $700k seed round led by strategic Healthcare-IT investor, Bootstrap Incubation, along with angel investors from Facebook, Apple, and Tech Coast Angels.
“With the recent changes in healthcare trends that have shifted costs to consumers, there is an increasing need for transparency and ability for consumers to know their costs upfront. Doctible is a great example of what we look for, a fantastic team taking a unique approach to the growing problem of healthcare costs and accessibility” said Jean Balgrosky, Managing Partner of Bootstrap Incubation and former Chief Information Officer, Scripps Health.
The idea of launching a transparent medical shopping website is well-timed, as more and more Americans are now on high-deductible health insurance plans and have to carefully calculate their medical costs to avoid going into debt when receiving the bill. However, if you have ever tried to contact any clinic directly and find out the exact procedure costs – you know you are likely to fail. That’s exactly when Doctible comes handy.
How it works
The platform allows you to search and compare prices on certain procedures from different specialists listed, view working hours, schedule and instantly book an appointment. Currently, there are 13 specialties including Dentists, OBGYN, Primary and Urgent Medical care; all available mainly in the San Diego Bay area.
Each specialist listed has its own profile page where you can read the reviews from other patients and see the ratings; check out available appointment times and dates and most importantly – transparent prices listed in two categories “Cash price” and “Insurance Price”. Appointments are booked with just one click. As usual, the provider will bill you for the service only after it’s been provided.
Doctible is aimed to take medical transparency to the next level and allow consumers to control the market prices and avoid paying the bills they can’t afford. Plus, there no more need to worry about choosing a doctor from your health insurance network. Visit the specialists you like, pay the prices you believe to be fair, and get up to 40% lower prices compared to what you could have paid with the insurance.
