Mel Robbins: How The Snooze Button Is Killing Your Business

Who doesn’t hit the snooze button now and again? Those precious 10 minutes feel like a gift that allows you to nod off into a brief pre-morning nap. But what you don’t know is that snoozing is actually costing your business money.

At the Inc 5000 conference in San Antonio, Texas, I sat down with Mel Robbins, award-winning CNN commentator and best-selling author of  Stop Saying You’re Fine, and The 5 Second Rule. We talked about how that little button could be dominating your morning productivity.

Close to 65 percent of adults hit the snooze button, Robbins said. And based on our 75 minute block sleep cycles, each time we hit the snooze button, we put ourselves back into that groggy state. When we finally throw off the sheets, it takes our body longer, sometimes four hours, to actually wake up and reach prime functioning.

How you wake up and spend the first 30 minutes of the morning could determine the productivity of your day. It starts by getting up, waking up, and being present when it comes to your actions, Robbins explained.

During those first 30 minutes, looking at your phone right away is probably the worst thing to do for your business. Instead of reviewing a priority list of what you need to do to build your business, you’re filling your brain up with emails, employee requests, and Facebook posts before you’ve had time to figure out a game plan, Robbins continued.

“If your business is important then it deserves your attention the first 30 minutes of the day. You have to fight for 30 minutes, even 10 minutes for your business,” said Robbins.

When it comes to getting what you want out of life and business, Mel Robbins said you need to look inward.

“You’ve got to actually listen to yourself. The way you build productivity [is to] start honoring those instincts with action,” she said.

As you grow your business, it’s important to celebrate those mini milestones, but as Robbins will tell you – it’s what happens after the champagne that determines success.

“Use celebration as a motivational tool. [However], what got you to this point of celebrating will not get you to the next stage in your business. The world is constantly changing and requires you to change.  There is a 10 year window behind every overnight success story and you need to have faith and listen to yourself and marry it with action,” said Mel Robbins.
