There’s big news coming from Mitoo today as they announce both a $1.5 million seed funding round and the release of the Mitoo V2 app in North America. It’s a huge step forward for the company as they work to establish themselves as the platform for social sports in North America and Western Europe.

Participating in the seed funding round are investors across a selection of current and former Facebook execs, like Dave Morin and Kevin Colleran’s Slow Ventures. Christina Hernandez’s White Star Capital and Tom Arrix, the former VP of North America for Facebook, are also participants in the round alongside Pentland Group.

“Sports is an area of passion for millions of people,” says Hernandez, Managing Partner of White Star Capital. “My teammate and I might meet up and play our hearts out every Wednesday evening, but not necessarily be friends on Facebook. Mitoo bridges that gap by allowing athletes to connect and communicate, and by allowing leagues to better attract and retain players.”

To that end the new Mitoo V2 app includes listings for almost 90 percent of amateur sports leagues across basketball, softball, soccer, football, rugby, and kickball, to name a few. It’s been wildly successful since its predecessor app was first release in the UK at the beginning of 2014.

The release of V2 for North America will help Mitoo take US based sports leagues to the next level. Both iOS and Android users will be able to use the app to find sports to play, leagues to become a part of, and existing players to connect with.

“Every level of organized sports consists of the same communication problems. These problems make it hard for new and interested amateur players to find, play, and most importantly stay involved in leagues. Mitoo is changing that with an organized and efficient experience built for league and players of community based sports,” says Andrew Crump, CEO and cofounder. “This round was really about bringing on board some incredible people with real experience in sports, platforms and networks, so it is truly great to be supported by many brilliant minds.”

Sports is something the entire team at Mitoo is incredibly passionate about: between them all they’ve played, coached, managed, and been parents on the sidelines. They’ve put that passion into the new version of the app, and by extension they’ll ignite the passion in others to play sports and stay in sports.
