After securing an undisclosed seed funding round from Flying Kiwi Angels, New Zealand Venture Investment Fund, Sparkbox Venture Group, EFU Investments Limited, and individual angel investors, New Zealand startup Notable PDF brought some Silicon Valley talent on board. Tapping Scott Nolan, Partner at Founders Fund, and Sam Altman, president of Y Combinator, they welcomed their first ever US investors.
“With the latest round, we’ll have the resources to keep hacking to be the best PDF tool for the cloud,” says Hengjie Wang, cofounder and CEO of Notable PDF. “With the lack of professional-grade PDF tools for businesses and educators, as they move towards the cloud, there is a huge opportunity for us to take over the market from likes of Adobe.”
Current web browsers allow you to open, view, and zoom in and out of PDFs without having to go through desktop applications. However, it’s a small convenience that most people would say leaves a lot to be desired.
Notable PDF operates as a Chrome extension that allows users to annotate PDF files from within Google’s Chrome browser. The extension works both on and offline and it can open PDFs from desktops, web links, and Google Drive and Box.
“Working in PDFs has been one of the most stubborn pain points online – and with more and more collaboration moving to the cloud, the problem has been getting worse,” says Nolan. “Notable PDF solved it, creating simply the best way to view, annotate, and modify PDFs in the browser and offline. With its team’s big vision for online collaboration, I’m excited for what’s in store.”
Viewers can annotate PDFs by adding comments and highlighting text before saving the final files as either text or PDF format. Since launching in March 2014, almost one year ago, Notable PDF has seen over 940,000 installs, 4 million annotations saved, 3 million documents opened, and 250,000 users.
“We are still in the early days of online collaboration. Notable PDF is one of the most exciting leaps forward I’ve seen,” says Altman.
The seed funding Notable PDF secured will be used to further boost their presence in the US; 80 percent of their current users are based in America. In addition, they’ll further product development to continue dominating the PDF space.
