With the amount of digital shoppers still being on the rise, both traditional stores and entrepreneurs-to-be are actively considering different e-commerce store options. While certainly the demand is there, it doesn’t mean that all you need to do is simply launch an ecommerce website and get a heap of excited consumers on your launch day.
While there are many shopping platforms out there, Magento seems to be getting the most praise lately for its usability and seemingly less optimization. The formula for a successful Magento store is really quite simple: the more people that come into your website, the more likely you are to sell your products. One of the best ways to accomplish this is through search engine optimization.
Unfortunately, if you are new to ecommerce, this can be a tricky thing to figure out. Here’s some better news: there are a few simple steps that you can take to easily boost your SEO, and get better rankings.
Add Great Content to Your Store
If you want your store to rank higher than your competitors, take the time to write or curate interesting content, other than your product descriptions and sales pages. Then, make sure it contains some of the keywords you believe potential customers will use to find your products. Search engines will reward you for this action and so does the customers, who are likely to land on one of your educational blog post while making a purchase decision.
Help Search Engines Figure Out What Your Pictures Are All About
When you add pictures to your store, give them meaningful titles. Then, don’t forget to use alt tags as well. These will tell search engines what each picture is. For example, Prod-18A13 doesn’t mean much, but Designer-Sunglasses-Mens-Black does. Pair that with a good description in the alt tag, and you’re on your way.
Don’t Duplicate Product Content
Each product should have its own unique description, even if it is only a slightly different version of another product. Find that difference and include that in the new description, even if it is something as simple as size or color.
Use Extensions to Improve User Experience
SEO rankings aren’t just based on content, keywords, and meta tags. They are also based on user behavior once they enter your store. If you have respective Magento extensions installed, those will make your store a better place to visit, navigate, and shop, and your customers will stay longer. In turn, this will result in decreasing your bounce rate. If customers like your store enough, your inbound links and social shares will also increase. All of these things will boost your SEO rankings.
Get Your Robots.txt File to Work for You
Google uses this file to index your website. The information you put in that file tells Google whether or not you want them to do so, and how you want them to do so. Try making the following modification to your robots.txt file:
- Go into ‘System’
- Click into ‘Configuration’
- Click into ‘Design’
- Click into ‘HTML Heads’
- Find the ‘Default Robots’ setting and change it to “INDEX,FOLLOW”
Now search engines will index your website.
Fill Out the Meta Fields
Use Magento’s back-end to create a meaningful meta title and description for your store. Do this by going into the configuration page/design/HTML Head just like you did to change the robots.txt file. Then, change your default title and default description boxes to contain something meaningful. Don’t forget to include the relevant keywords as well.
Generate a Google Sitemap
Go into your configuration page and into the Google Sitemap settings and change your configuration so that sitemap generation is enabled. If you add a new product or category, be sure to go back and change the settings again so your existing sitemap is updated.
