RECESS — the national tour that makes stops at various universities throughout the year — is a music and ideas festival that helps feature up-and-coming startups founded by student entrepreneurs. While the Spring 2015 Tour ended with the National Competition this May, followers of RECESS have something new to celebrate: RECESS has launched an “Office Hours” series on YouTube. The new series features a combination of musicians and established entrepreneurs such as Diplo, the Chainsmokers and Jermaine Dupree who can offer advice to aspiring entrepreneurs.

What You Should Know About the “Office Hours” Series

Some of the best advice can come from people who gone through similar experiences. Whether it’s determining where to start or how to get funding, “Office Hours” provides entrepreneurs with the resources and tips they’ll need to start and maintain their businesses in highly competitive markets. If you couldn’t make the tour dates, here’s some of what you missed.

Andrew Maguire — “Why You Shouldn’t Ask Relatives to Invest in Your Startup”

Andrew Maguire, the founder of Looksharp offers advice ranging from “how to get started without industry knowledge,” “turning your car into a conference room” and “how to get your business started”. He also suggests that “If you can avoid raising money from family, I would recommend it”:

Justin Kan, a Y-Combinator Partner,  also offered young entrepreneurs various points about “How to Stay Motivated When starting a Company,” “The Easiest Ways to Create Popular Videos” and “The Downsides to Having a Great Job.” Kan’s list of “Office Hours” tips spans 11 videos, but one of the most helpful might be “How to Get Into Y-Combinator:”

While RECESS hasn’t yet released its dates for the fall, the upcoming tour will feature the same format, which includes the Playground (Interactive Networking Fair), Study Hall (Speaker Series), Pitch (Ideas Competition) and Concert (end of the day celebration). Last year’s Spring tour included stops at Emory University, Indiana University, Georgetown University, Virginia Tech and more. RECESS’s partners include the USA Network  (Mr. Robot), AEG LIVE, Daymond John’s Moguls Mobile and more.
