Today, 15 years after eHarmony was founded, online dating sites are trying to innovate new models that don’t involve scanning through hundreds of profiles and laughing at unfortunate typos, too-flattering photos, and the same cliche interests.
Sites like How About We, for example, focus on getting pairs of singles out on dates and doing activities together as soon as possible. The logic is that this is the only way to determine chemistry, and spending time sending messages and building up expectations is often a waste.
Tinder, for the mobile generation, pares everything down to the basics: photo and age. With the glee of low attention-spanned teenagers, we can happily swipe and reject without feeling bad for being so superficial.
And finally, we’re also seeing a crop of sites like Tawkify that put a modern spin on matchmaking, doing the work for us because we’re so darn busy anyway.
But despite all these innovations, the dating profile still reigns. Most dating sites have some version of it, and it’s important to craft and shape and polish as if our future romantic happiness depended on it.
OnMutualTerms.com recently released a study of almost 7,000 profiles on their site, aiming to figure out the most attractive keywords for men and women. They analyzed these profiles over a three-month period to see which users got the most date offers, and then picked out the keywords they had in common. Here they are:
Top Keywords for Men’s Online Dating Profiles
Top Keywords for Women’s Online Dating Profiles
This analysis applies to heterosexual couples of a specific type: OnMutualTerms is for “sugar babies” looking for “sugar daddies” or “sugar mommas” (but not in a creepy, transactional way, they explain – just for people who care about finances and lifestyle and aren’t afraid to admit it).
Still, you can see that prospective daters are looking for well-rounded partners – who are “ambitious” and “successful” but also like “adventure” and spontaneity. We’ve also confirmed that dogs are babe magnets and why yoga pants are a thing. If you ever come across any online dating profiles for funny, successful dog owners or spontaneous, yoga-loving girls next door, now you’ll know why.
