It’s difficult to know when will you need to show your skills. Having your own elevator pitch ready can be very handy for when the situation arrives.
This speech should last not more than 60 seconds and it needs to communicate to your audience in a very clear manner what are you most important skills and why should the person listening care about it.
These are the main essentials you need to know before you start writing your elevator pitch:
An elevator pitch is simply a clear statement that describes what you do, how you help others, and what makes you different.
- It must be concise
- All your points need to be clear
- It has to be perfectly targeted
- Keep it focused, always having your objectives in mind
- Use words that create a visual effect, making it easier to memorize
- Hook your audience by prompting the other person to ask questions and get the conversation going
It will need to cover these 4Ws and 1H:
- Who are you? Give some personal information, relevant for the person listening.
- What do you do? Explain what are you good at.
- Where do you work? Location and other relevant details in your industry.
- Why do they need to know this? Explain your audience how you can be helpful for their business.
- How you are different from others? Not only different but how are you better than others and why.
But communication is not only about what you say; there are some other aspects that will affect the success of your pitch. The main ones are:
- Your body language, your posture and movements will tell the other person if you are really interested.
- Use your facial expressions to show your interest and excitement.
- Your smile, combined with eye contact and a firm handshake, inspire confidence and sincerity.
Practice is key to deliver a perfect elevator pitch; here are some other tips you may find extremely useful:
- Write down what you do in an array of different ways. Don’t edit your work now, but let your imagination run wild. Come up with as many variations as you can.
- Write down what makes you different from other people who are selling the same thing or working in the same profession. Do you have advanced qualifications? Do you have more experience working in that area? Are you so passionate about it that you do a lot of pro bono work?
- Make a list of your strengths. Don’t forget interpersonal skills you may possess such as being a team player, dependable, punctual, confident or a strong communicator. These skills will help you connect.
- Also, write down what your current objectives are. Are you looking for a job or perhaps to relocate to another city? Are you in the midst of a career transition? Are you looking for some advice or mentorship? Keep it fresh.
