Soleil Moon Frye, the 80s sitcom actress famous for her portrayal as Punky Brewster, today launched her already-popular iOS app Moonfrye for the Android platform. With veteran Internet executive Kara Nortman, Frye is looking to reach as many moms and kids as possible with her startup.
The inaugural mobile app, launched exclusive to the iOS platform this past August, showed strong engagement with more than 12 percent of users remaining active one month after the initial download. Further, more than 10 percent of in-app creations are being shared across social media outlets.
The family photo app also had the good fortune to bring in $2.5 million in seed funding this past April and steadily grow that initial funding to a current total of $3.6 million. The early backers of Moonfrye include Daher Capital, Google Ventures, Greycroft Partners, and Upfront Ventures.
The recent jump to Android is the first step that Nortman and Frye are taking to unleash their big plans for Moonfrye. They want to extend the platform to offer an entertainment and educational experience that will bridge the gap between the digital and physical worlds of its users.
Currently, Moonfrye already sends users themed sticker pads as rewards for ongoing usage, but they are working to get do-it-yourself craft projects to users based specifically on the themes chosen by them in-app, like princesses or cowboys. Projects can be designed either for individual children or for groups, such as those at an at-home birthday party or after-school playdate.
“We knew that parents and kids have all these photos just sitting around,” says Nortman. “We wanted to give them an avenue to craft them into a permanent memory.”
