Yesterday, eight DC startups went head-to-head to be crowned DC’s Startup of the Year and move on to the semi-finals next month. There is only one more stop on our national tour, and we’re wrapping things up in Albuquerque next Tuesday. Of the competing DC startups, RouteHero was chosen as the crowd favorite at the event, and Spirtway was voted as the winner in the online poll.

RouteHero is a team of one building apps to improve your daily commute through alerts and information. For those of us in DC, rush hour commutes are often a nightmare, and metro reliability continues to plummet. Aptly named, RouteHero let’s you schedule alerts for specific times around your route, being the hero we need to find alternative options. The app is currently available on Android, and have plans for launching on iOS in the future.

Spiritway: is an all-encompassing web platform. Buy and sell web components using their platform and aggregate web data with no technical experience required. Their tools are self-service and free to try. They provide additional services and support for a fee.

We’d like to thank all of the sponsors who helped make this event possible: Vornado, Crystal City BIDArlington Economic Development, Saul Ewing, American Airlines, and CEA.

DC Startup Contenders

Among the other DC startups pitching for the local startup crown, Spiritway won the online poll for crowd favorite. Other startups focused on improving trips for professionals, an app that makes it easier to meet with friends, and a gamified way to learn about new travel destinations.

Spiritway: Want to crawl any website on the web using only your browser? No coding required! Send updates to your email or phone.

Traipse: Unlock the city with Traipse! Explore streetscapes, landmarks, and locally-owned businesses while challenging your brain with fun puzzles.

Road Warrior: Route Planning App for delivery mavens, superstar drivers, and efficiency aficionados. DC Startup. In the App store & Google Play.

Poshpacker: The world’s first hotelier booking site for upscale backpacking.

MyDealerOnline: enables car dealers to sell the cars before they buy.

Ignite: Pitch get together ideas, if they get enough traction within a group, they get done! No unnecessary communication, no potential rejection!

CyberTimez: helps the physically disabled be independent, deaf be environmentally aware and blind better enabled to function in a sighted world.

And finally, the folks at MyDealersOnline brought a balance board of sorts, and the attendees had a few issues finding their footing.
