Location has a been a hot topic lately as mobile applications and advertising platforms continue to arise. SimpleGeo, a Boulder, Colorado based startup founded by Matt Galligan (formerly of SocialThing) and Joe Stump (formerly of Digg) looks to help make adding location based services and data to your applications a breeze. Presenting at the O’Reilly Where 2.0 conference today in San Jose, California, Matt Galligan launched the platform which looks to offer an array of data bundles and location based cloud services.

The company already has more than 4,000 developers utilizing the SimpleGeo platform for new and existing applications and more than 1,000 additional developers are awaiting the product’s formal launch.  The company introduced two major products today:

  • SimpleGeo Storage Engine a scalable, cloud-based, pay-as-you-go system that allows users to store location data and perform geo-spatial and temporal queries efficiently.
  • The SimpleGeo Marketplace allows developers to discover a wealth of geodata from numerous sources, all normalized and available in one location.  The SimpleGeo Marketplace creates a new economy for geodata providers, putting them directly in touch with developers that want to use their data.

At South by Southwest a few weeks ago SimpleGeo showcased its APIs with the launch of the sample application, Vicarious.ly. Vicarious.ly is a visual representation of the real-time location-based stream of information to showcase the APIs and application partners which include BlockChalk, Brightkite, Bump Technologies, Flickr, Fwix, Foursquare, Gowalla and Twitter.

This is exciting news for anyone looking to create an application that is going to factor in location. I had a chance to spend some time with SimpleGeo CEO Matt Galligan at the World Mobile Congress in Barcelona in February. We ducked out of the rain for a pint to conclude a busy week and he shared an impromptu simple definition of SimpleGeo in this video (below).
