South Florida-based New Wave Surgical Corp. was acquired by Ireland-based Covidien for more than $100 million.

New Wave Surgical Corp. invented and distributed the D-HELP kit, which keeps laparoscopic and robotic lenses heated and clean during procedures. The founder, R. Alexander Gomez, was trying to raise capital for expansion before the acquisition.

In a recent interview with Nancy Dahlberg’s The Starting Gate, Gomez explained: “We had been growing very quickly. We were getting orders from around the world. I knew I wanted to make it the standard of care. With Covidien, now it really can dominate.”

Gomez plans to start a fund to help other entrepreneurs.
