Sphero is an innovative robotic ball that puts a whole new spin (pun intended) on the interactive experience by turning your smart phone into a robot controller.

This new game platform, which is open to developers, changes the way we use our smart phones and takes gaming to a whole new level.  The Sphero ball, which is the size of a baseball, can be transformed into the object in a game on your phone – think racing through a maze using the Sphero on your floor, taking part in a head-to-head sumo match, or controlling a device in your friend’s apartment from within your own apartment.

Sphero allows real-time data updates during game play, directly connects physical information from the ball to the phone, and works with almost all major smart phones via Bluetooth technology.  Their simple-to-use API allows programmers of any level to create an app.  To learn more, check out their developer program and this video:

Sphero is one of the featured startups at our SXSW Accelerator Kickoff on Sunday.  Stop by to learn more about ordering the device, which is expected to ship at the end of 2011.
