Beyond grilling and having the right playlist, there are a lot of other activities associated with spring. The great outdoors is an open playground for hiking, gardening, sports, and even camping, but there is no reason you can’t take some tech with you.
Although we’d love to spend the cool evenings and warm days as we please, occasionally we have to dig into our to-do list and do some maintenance as well. For part three of our Spring Gadget Guide, we’re digging into both of these. To kick things off we spoke with the founder and creator of Edyn, Jason Aramburu. Edyn is a ground sensor to keep you better connected to your garden, and was successfully funded through Kickstarter.
What inspired you to create the Edyn sensor?
Aramburu: Prior to founding Edyn, I spent 6 years as a scientist helping farming communities in Panama and Kenya to improve their yield. Working with small farmers in these areas allowed me to witness many of the challenges they faced and I wondered if technology and sensors could all help us become better growers and ultimately, better conservationists. In 2013, I teamed up with industrial designer and sustainability advocate, Yves Behar and his design firm, fuseproject to create Edyn.
What was the focus for your latest round of funding?
Aramburu: We raised an extension of our seed round of funding in February and will be using the money to roll out the Edyn Water Valve, develop new products, access commercial industries and expand internationally, beginning with the Japanese market. This funding really helps us extend Edyn’s use commercially while maintaining its utility for consumer gardeners and our goal is to reach sustainability on a local and global scale. Additionally, our investor, Fenox Venture Capital has roots in Japan and they are the ideal partner to help us forge those partnerships overseas.
