Tesla has been considering several locations to build a large-scale battery factory, and the company confirmed in its letter to shareholders yesterday that Reno, Nevada, is one of them.

Tesla said it broke ground in June near Reno and is also considering locations in Arizona, California, New Mexico, and Texas. The company will decide the final location in the next few months, but in the meantime wants to keep their options open to avoid delays.

The Gigafactory will produce batteries for Tesla’s new Model 3:

“This vehicle will be our third-generation product and will substantially broaden the addressable market for Tesla, helping to accelerate the transition towards sustainable transportation,” the statement said.

The Gigafactory will be built in partnership with Panasonic, who will be providing the battery cells.
