Tiny Build-It-Yourself SubSonex Jet Completes First Flight

Sonex Aircraft’s SubSonex, a tiny single-seat, DIY jet, completed a 14-minute first flight in Oshkosh, Wisconsin last week.  Because the SubSonex was designed to feed every pilot’s fantasy to own and fly a jet, I started thinking: Could this be the beginning of our transition from cars to private planes, a la The Jetsons?

The SubSonex capitalizes on new generation small turbine engines – and could possibly use alternative biofuels – to allow you to tool around the neighborhood.  So, no flying from Chicago down to Miami for the weekend when you just can’t take winter anymore.

In reading through the FAQ, I could totally see this aircraft parked in someone’s garage and casually rolled out when the urge to fly hits. It has removable wings and is aerobatic.  Eventually, it will be available as a complete kit that you can build at home.
