I should probably wait until the end to tell you the most downloaded app of all time, but I myself hate being kept in suspense, so I won’t do that to you.
The most downloaded app of all time is…drumroll please…
Have you picked your jaw up off the floor? Okay, good. Now we can continue.
In a free downloadable report, the app store analytics firm App Annie released lists of the top mobile apps of all time in categories such as worldwide downloads, worldwide revenue, and most downloaded games. Facebook came in at number one for most worldwide downloads while Pandora topped the list for most worldwide revenue. Candy Crush was the big winner in the most downloaded games category.
Social media apps dominated the top downloads list with Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, and Twitter all making the top ten. Others on the list were Skype, Google Maps, and iTunes U.
The most fascinating part of the report for me is the geographical analytics that give us insight into what apps people are using in other parts of the world. It’s interesting to note that not a single one of the top apps in the United States, the UK, or Japan cracked the top 10 apps in China.
If you don’t want to download the report, here are a few key takeaways:
- Casual games make up for 9 of the top 10 downloaded iOS games.
- Google, Apple, and Facebook dominate the rankings for non-game apps.
- The top grossing iOS apps are mostly related to entertainment or dating.
