18 Top Regions for VC Funding in 2014

In 2014, $48.3 billion was invested by venture capitalists, a 61% increase in VC funding from 2013.

Software received the most VC funding, accounting for $19.8 billion and almost 1,800 deals, followed by biotech ($6 billion) and media/entertainment ($5.7 billion). The most money was invested in expansion-stage companies (over 3 years old), then early-stage companies, later-stage companies, and seed companies.

These statistics comes from the February MoneyTree Report by the National Venture Capital Association and PricewaterhouseCoopers, based on data from Thomson Reuters.

Below are the top regions that received VC funding in 2014. We saw the most growth in Sacramento/Northern California (up 209% from 2013) and the Southwest (up 137%). As usual, the list was topped by Silicon Valley, accounting for almost half of total VC funding in 2014: 

1. Silicon Valley: $23.4 billion

2. NY Metro: $5.02 billion

Includes Metropolitan NY, northern New Jersey, Fairfield County, CT

3. New England: $5 billion

Includes Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, parts of Connecticut

4. LA/Orange County: $2.85 billion

5. Midwest: $2.16 billion

Includes Illinois, Missouri, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Michigan, western Pennsylvania

6. Southeast: $1.90 billion

Includes Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina

7. Texas: $1.51 billion

8. Northwest: $1.44 billion

Includes Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming

9. Southwest: $1.12 billion

Includes Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada

10. DC/Metroplex: $1.08 billion

Includes DC, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland

11. San Diego: $805 million

12. Colorado: $793 million

13. North Central: $529 million

Includes Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska

14. Philadelphia Metro: $464 million

15. South Central: $132 million

Includes Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana

16. Sacramento/Northern California: $129 million

17. Upstate NY: $39.3 million

18. Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico: $1.30 million
